Don’t Let Seasickness Sink Your Day

Nothing dampens a day on the water faster than the unwelcome wave of nausea known as seasickness. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or setting out on your first private charter, it’s helpful to understand what causes motion sickness—and how to beat it before it beats you.

Why Does Seasickness Happen?

Seasickness is a type of motion sickness caused by a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your inner ear (your body’s balance center) feels. When you’re on a boat, your body feels the rocking motion, but if your eyes are fixed inside the cabin or on something still, your brain receives mixed signals. That sensory mismatch can lead to dizziness, nausea, cold sweats, and, unfortunately, vomiting.

Some people are more sensitive to motion than others, and even experienced boaters can be caught off guard if the conditions are just right (or wrong).

How to Prevent Seasickness

Here are a few tried-and-true ways to stay steady before and during your Signature Dives excursion:

1. Medicate Early

If you’re prone to motion sickness, take an over-the-counter remedy like Dramamine or Bonine at least an hour before departure. For stronger protection, your doctor might recommend a scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop), which goes behind your ear and lasts several days.

2. Eat Smart

Avoid greasy, spicy, or heavy foods before boarding. A light meal (like toast or crackers) is best. Ginger candies or tablets are also known to help settle the stomach.

3. Pick Your Spot

Choose a seat near the center of the boat, where the rocking is least noticeable. Stay in the open air, keep your eyes on the horizon, and let your brain sync with your body.

4. Stay Hydrated & Skip the Booze

Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine, which can make symptoms worse.

5. Pressure Points

Wristbands that apply pressure to the P6 acupressure point on your wrist may help some people find relief.

What to Do If You Start Feeling Sick Onboard

We get it—sometimes seasickness just sneaks up on you. If it does, here’s what to do aboard your Signature Dives charter:

  • Tell the Crew: Don’t suffer in silence. Our crew is trained to assist and can suggest the best place on the boat to ride out the waves.

  • Move Outside: Fresh air and a clear view of the horizon can do wonders. Avoid the cabin or any area that amplifies motion.

  • Lie Down: If possible, lie on your back and close your eyes. This helps reduce the sensory confusion your brain is experiencing.

  • Stay Cool: Overheating can make symptoms worse. The crew can help you find a shady spot and stay cool.

  • Sip Water or Ginger Ale: Small sips of fluids can help calm your stomach and prevent dehydration.

You’re Not Alone—And It’s Nothing to Be Embarrassed About

Even the most experienced ocean lovers can get seasick. At Signature Dives, we prioritize your comfort just as much as your adventure. Our private charters are built for small groups, so you’ll have plenty of space and personal attention to help manage any discomfort and still enjoy your day.

So don’t let the fear of seasickness keep you from exploring Puerto Rico’s stunning underwater world. With a little preparation—and a crew that’s always got your back—you can keep your sea legs steady and focus on what really matters: the dive of a lifetime.
