Support Local Animal Rescues in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico faces a serious stray animal crisis, with thousands of abandoned dogs and cats struggling to survive on the streets each day. Limited resources, lack of access to affordable veterinary care, and frequent natural disasters have only made the situation worse. Many of these animals are left without food, shelter, or medical attention. Local rescue groups are doing everything they can — often with very little — to provide care, spay and neuter services, and find safe, loving homes. At Signature Dives, we’re committed to supporting these efforts and being part of the solution.
The Humane Society of Puerto Rico (HSPR) has been a cornerstone of animal welfare on the island for over six decades, dedicated to promoting a shared sense of responsibility and improving the quality of life for Puerto Rican animals . They manage a full-service shelter in Guaynabo that offers affordable veterinary care—including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and basic medical treatment—to help prevent overpopulation and reduce animal suffering.
Your support empowers HSPR to do so much more than rescue and shelter. Every donation contributes to their efforts in pet surrender appointments, Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs for community cats, and educational outreach that fosters responsible pet ownership across the island . With a strong track record of accountability, community engagement, and lifesaving impact, the Humane Society of Puerto Rico is a trusted organization that turns contributions into real, measurable change.
Save A Gato (SAG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare and care of the cats of Old San Juan through TNR, fostering, and adoption. Save A Gato manages the colony of cats on the Paseo del Morro and the rest of Old San Juan. SAG must stress the fact that we are not a shelter, and we cannot accept cats from outside of Old San Juan under any circumstances.
Cats are trapped, and then sterilized, and vaccinated. Since many stray cats are feral and not adoptable, they are returned to their original colonies. SAG volunteers lovingly monitor the community cats and provide fresh food and water on a daily basis.
Save a Gato also offers the option to adopt cats while they are going through the TNR process. Sometimes, the cats that are trapped in Old San Juan are pregnant, kittens, or friendly adults. These will often go into foster care until they are ready to be adopted. Most are sent to our local PetSmart and PetCo stores, while others are adopted directly through SAG (email us-saveagatopr@gmail.com) or sent to rescue partners in the United States. You can see our available kitties on our Adopt page or on social media.
Save A Sato is a non-profit organization dedicated to easing the suffering of Puerto Rico’s homeless and abused animals. “Sato” is slang for street dog. We rescue Satos from the streets and beaches, give them medical care, food and shelter, and plenty of love. When they are healthy, we send them to one of our partner shelters for adoption into loving homes.
We are located in the heart of Puerto Rico, San Juan, where we try to help our neighbors, friends, and people from all around the island take good care of their pets, providing them food, vaccines and medical care if possible. We also help tourists and visitors that want to take a rescue back to their home in the mainland, to make it possible!
Save A Sato has been around for 26 years now! And Gloria Marti has been keeping this organization alive and working 365 days a year to run the shelter. The main shelter of Save A Sato foundation is known as the “Shelter of Miracles”, where the organization takes care of over 120 dogs and close to 200 cats (sometimes more). We also have over 150 cats in our second shelter “Gatolandia” maintained by Raquel Malaret. All of our dogs and cats are rescues from the streets or abandoned, we don’t receive pets from people looking to get “rid” of them. But if you need advice, or maybe medical help with your pet, contact us, we will help you!
